EMERALD COAST ARMWRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Emerald Coast Armwrestling Championships proved that Ft Walton Beach, Florida has become "the" place in Northwest Florida for topnotch competition. As witnessed, experienced, and challenged by the national ranked team of Jacksonville, Florida, highly competitive team of Southwest Georgia, energized Tallahassee, Florida team, and the up-and-coming Ft Walton Beach, Team, this championship brought out the best skills, spirit, and sportsmanship of all the participants and spectators.

The tournament director was Dale Vicos, a northern state competitor of years past, now promoting our sport in the tradition of good taste, enthusiasm, and success. This 104-entrant event was held at Don Carlos Restaurant and Sports Bar, Ft Walton Beach, Florida, November 6, 1999 under a big tent. This was Dale’s fourth tournament he organized and the first AAA sanctioned tournament. His tournaments continue to grow in competitors and prizes, starting with a no-notice tournament at a local fair in Apr 98 with 30 competitors, a Fourth of July tournament of 50 competitors, a Don Carlos Invitational with 90 competitors and this most recent with 104 athletes! He and Greg Helm (AAA Florida State Director) tag teamed this event and made a lasting positive impression to the pros and novice who competed. Greg and Dale combined forces, orchestrating a smoothly run tournament, consisting of men’s novice right hand, men’s open right hand, men’s open left hand, and women’s open right hand divisions, totaling 16 weight classes. Of course you can’t have a tournament without officials and Dave Leonard and Dave Radloff filled the billet with superior professionalism and fairness, boasting of not receiving one complaint from any of the wrestlers or audience members! Dale was surrounded by first-class people, working and maintaining the tournament brackets were Lee Leonard, Robyn Kay, Shannon Hunt and video taping the matches was Steve Dasher. We just can’t say enough of Don Tank, Manager, Don Carlos Restaurant, who accommodated every wish to help ensure this tournament was a huge success!

First, Second, and Third place trophies for each class were presented with a very popular "Crowd Pleaser" trophy, along with all entrants received a memorable T-shirt. Ft Walton Beach, Florida citizens are fortunate to have generous local merchants to sponsor such an event. As everyone knows, to provide trophies and prizes and keep the registration fee to a minimum (the fee was only $5.00 for initial entry and $3.00 for any additional weight classes), it requires sponsorship. The sponsors included radio station 99 Rock, Night Watch Protection Services, Inc., Fitness Masters Equipment Superstores, Corona, TGI Friday Restaurant, Blimpie Subs, Giff’s Subs, The Shoppe (trophies), American Athletic Uniforms,  Buffalo Rock Pepsi, and of course Don Carlos Restaurant and Sports Bar. Okay, enough of all that, our hats are off to the following winners (oh by the way, the tournament didn’t have any losers, they were referred to as "challengers"):
